SUMMARY:July Quarterly Luncheon & General Membership Meeting (Quarterly Luncheon & Speaker)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that in 1940\, the United States Army acquired 17\,000 acres in St. Charles County\, bordering the Missouri River\, to build one of the country’s largest explosives production plants for World War II? The production of explosives needed water – lots of it\, and the Missouri River provided. The plant closed at the end of the war and most of the land was transferred to public entities. In 1955\, the U.S. Army transferred about 200 acres to the Atomic Energy Commission for construction of the Weldon Spring Uranium Feed Materials Plant. From 1957 to 1964 the plant converted impure uranium concentrates to pure uranium salts and metals. Today\, after an 18 year environmental cleanup\, the land has been transformed from a contaminated industrial waste site to a revitalized landscape the includes an engineered disposal cell surrounded by 150 acres of native prairie and an interpretive center. In this presentation\, Launa Danielson will share the stories and the photos of the Weldon Spring’s Site complex past and long-term plans for the future.ALL OCCASION BANQUET CENTER111 Compass Point Drive St. Charles\, MO\, 63301(RIGHT BEHIND THE HAMPTON INN at CAVE SPRING) The program and luncheon are $30 and require advance reservations. Main St. St. Charles Mo. 63301at St. Charles County Historical Society Archives101 S. Main St. St. Charles\, Mo 63301Genealogical Legalis: Biographical Sketches of Prominent Missouri Legal Officials 1805 to Present DayThis book includes historical profiles of the 59 individuals who served as Attorney General/Circuit Attorney/Prosecuting Attorney for what became St. Charles County from 1805 until the present day.The profiles tell of the lives of the people in the context of history and what was going on not only locally but also on a state-wide and national level. Read about:• how large the circuit or area was with many counties that was the responsibility of the legal official during different periods of time• duels that were fought even though such behavior was against the law• the many states that these individuals came from with many staying in the area and living out their lives• where these public servants were buried• how so many people had to have known the other- for example\, one man’s daughter was the second wife of another man who served as Circuit Attorney who served years later• and some rose to prominence- a cabinet member in Abraham Lincoln’s administration The records held at the St. Charles County Historical Society provided a great deal of information about these legal officials.$27.50 including taxDownload: Book Signing
