DESCRIPTION:Did you know that in 1940\, the United States Army acquired 17\,000 acres in St. Charles County\, bordering the Missouri River\, to build one of the country’s largest explosives production plants for World War II? The production of explosives needed water – lots of it\, and the Missouri River provided. The plant closed at the end of the war and most of the land was transferred to public entities.  In 1955\, the U.S. Army transferred about 200 acres to the Atomic Energy Commission for construction of the Weldon Spring Uranium Feed Materials Plant. From 1957 to 1964 the plant converted impure uranium concentrates to pure uranium salts and metals. Today\, after an 18 year environmental cleanup\, the land has been transformed from a contaminated industrial waste site to a revitalized landscape the includes an engineered disposal cell surrounded by 150 acres of native prairie and an interpretive center.In this presentation\, Launa Danielson will share the stories and the photos of the Weldon Spring’s Site complex past and long-term plans for the future.ALL OCCASION BANQUET CENTER111 Compass Point Drive St. Charles\, MO\, 63301(RIGHT BEHIND THE HAMPTON INN at CAVE SPRING) The program and luncheon are $30 and require advance reservations.
